Low Water Pressure – Common Causes & Fixes

Solving Low Water Pressure Problems

There’s nothing more frustrating than turning on the shower and getting a weak trickle of water in response. Or trying to wash-up with flow of water that simply isn’t up to the job. Low water pressure is a common experience, and it can seriously impact your stress-levels unless you find a solution quickly.

At Simply Plumbing, we’ve been helping customers tackle low water pressure for years. We know how frustrating it is to deal with, especially if you don’t know why it’s happening. That’s why we’ve put together this blog to help you understand what might be causing your low pressure and what you can do about it. Oh, and you don’t need to be a plumbing expert to understand it!

What’s Causing My Low Water Pressure? Common Causes

Water leaks from a shiny metal pipe under a sink or toilet, dripping onto the tiled floor, indicating a plumbing issue. Such leaks can also contribute to low water pressure—common causes & fixes for this problem often involve repairing or replacing faulty pipes and fittings.

When you’re faced with weak water flow, the first step to fixing the problem is to understand what’s causing it. Low water pressure can arise from a variety of issues, some simple and some more complex. We’ll look at the most common ones.

1. Problems with Your Plumbing System

  • Leaky Pipes – If you have a leak in one of your pipes, water will be spraying out before it reaches its end point, Even a small leak will impact your water pressure.

  • Blocked Pipes – Over time, limescale and other debris like hair and food scraps can build up inside your pipes, and they limit the flow of water.

  • Closed or Partially Closed Valves – Every plumbing system has valves that control the flow of water from taps and showers. If your main water stop valve or a valve on a specific fixture is partially closed, it will restrict the water flow and reduce pressure.

2. Issues with Your Water Supply

  • Problems with the Main Water Supply – Sometimes, the problem isn’t within your home at all. Issues with the water supply, such as maintenance or repairs on water mains, can cause temporary drops in water pressure.

  • High Water Demand in Your Area – Mornings and evenings are peak water usage times, and if the demand exceeds the supply at these times, the water pressure will drop.

3. Problems with Your Fixtures

  • Faulty Taps or Showerheads – Taps and showerheads can become blocked by limescale, as a result of hard water, which restricts water flow. Cleaning or replacing these parts can often restore good pressure.

  • Pressure Reducing Valve Issues – Also known as a water pressure regulator, PRVs reduce water pressure as it comes into your home. If you have one fitted, it might be malfunctioning or set incorrectly.

Diagnosing and Fixing Your Low Water Pressure – A Step-by-Step Guide

Now we’ve identified the potential causes, it’s time to work out what’s causing your low water pressure. The following will help you pinpoint the problem and try out some DIY fixes. Remember, if you’re not confident with any of these steps or if the problem continues, it’s always best to call a qualified plumber for advice.

Step 1 - Check Your Fixtures

  • Start with the Basics – Check all your taps and showerheads. Are they all experiencing low pressure, or just one? If it’s just one, the problem is likely to be that specific tap or showerhead.
  • Clean Aerators and Showerheads – If you have aerators fixed to your taps and showerheads, unscrew them and clean them under running water. Your aim is to remove anything that’s stopping the flow of water. Then test the water pressure -hopefully the problems will be fixed.

Step 2: Check Your Valves

  • Main Water Shut-Off Valve – Make sure your main water stop valve is fully open.

Step 3: Check for Leaks

  • Visible Leaks – Inspect all visible pipes under sinks, behind toilets, and in your basement for any signs of leaks.
  • Hidden Leaks – If you suspect a hidden leak (perhaps you’ve noticed water stains on walls or ceilings), now’s the time to call a plumber. Finding and repairing hidden leaks can be complex.

Step 4: Check with Your Neighbours

  • Ask Around – If you’ve ruled out problems within your home, ask your neighbours if they are also experiencing low water pressure either generally, or at certain times of the day. If they are, the problem is likely to be one for your water supplier and you should contact them to alert them to the problem.

When to Call a Professional

  • Persistent Low Pressure – If you’ve tried the above steps and your water pressure is still low, it’s time to call a professional.
  • Suspected Hidden Leaks – Hidden leaks can cause significant damage if left unchecked.
  • Complex Plumbing Issues – If you’re uncomfortable working with plumbing or suspect a more complex problem, it’s best to leave it to the professionals. We at Simply Plumbing are always happy to help!
