How Does Hard Water Affect Your Plumbing?

In Luton we know all about hard water! It’s difficult to build up a lather with soap, and kettles need constant treatment for limescale. It can also aggravate, or even be the cause of dry skin, itchiness, and blocked pores. Bedfordshire has some of the hardest water in the UK (second only to Essex and Hertfordshire), so this blog is all about how hard water can affect your plumbing, and the symptoms you should look out for.

What is Hard Water?

All our tap water contains minerals and chemicals. The exact mix will be dependent on where your water is sourced. Hard water has a higher concentration of magnesium and calcium in it; this is because it’s filtered through chalk on its way to our taps. There are no health hazards associated with drinking hard water, but dry, itchy skin is one of its side-products.

Plumbing Problems Caused by Hard Water

You’ve most likely noticed the external signs of hard water on your taps and showerheads. It tends to leave a white mineral scale. This not only looks unpleasant; it builds up over time and can affect the flow of water from your shower. Regular use of a limescale remover will keep this at bay.

Less visible symptoms affecting your plumbing include:

1. Limescale in Your Pipes

Limescale accretes to the inside of your pipes and gradually builds up a layer which reduces the internal diameter. Symptoms include regular blockages and reduced water flow. Regular doses of white vinegar, or lemon juice, are recommended to keep it in under control. If you experience difficulty clearing your pipes, you’ll need a plumber

2. Pipe Corrosion Causing Leaks

Over time, hard water will cause damage to your pipes. The first symptoms of pipe corrosion are usually pinhole leaks that can occur behind the walls, in the sewer system or under the floor. Look out for damp patches, or a damp smell developing in your bathroom or kitchen. The pipes will have to be replaced by a professional plumber.

3. Clogged Up Appliances

Limescale in your plumbing can affect the flow of water to your washing machine, or dishwasher. There are a number of branded deep cleaning products that clear bacteria from feeder and keep them free from limescale. You should aim to give your appliances a thorough clean once a month to maintain peak performance.
