1. Low Boiler Pressure – Getting Things Back to Normal
One of the most common reasons for no hot water or heating in many of the Bedfordshire homes we visit is low boiler pressure.
So, what causes the pressure to drop? If you’ve had to bleed your radiators recently, that can cause it. Otherwise, it could be a tiny leak somewhere in your central heating system, or there may be an issue with the pressure relief valve.
First, here’s what you can do to fix it right now:
Find The Gauge – It’s usually very visible – a circular dial with a needle. Ideally, that needle should be sitting between 1 and 1.5 bar.
Now, if the pressure is low, you might be able to re-pressurise the system yourself. But, and this is important, only do this if you feel comfortable and confident. If you’re unsure at all, it’s always best to call us.
If you’re OK to try, here are the steps to re-pressurise most combi boilers:
- Find the Filling Loop – Look at your manual for this. It will be two pipes connected by a flexible hose, normally silver coloured, under the boiler.
- Open the Valves – Slowly! – You’ll usually find a valve at each end of the filling loop. Open one very slowly and then open the second very slowly. You’ll hear water flowing into the system.
- Watch the Gauge – As the water flows, watch the pressure gauge. Once it reaches the midway spot between 1 and 1.5 bar, close both valves tightly.

2. No Pilot Light (For Older Boilers)
This section mainly applies if you live in a Bedfordshire property with an older boiler that has a pilot light. Newer boilers use electronic ignition, in which case, go on to the next troubleshooting section.
If you do have a pilot light and you’ve got no hot water or heating, it’s possible the pilot light has gone out. Often a draught is enough to extinguish it. Other possible causes include a faulty thermocouple (a safety device that senses the pilot light) or a blockage in the pilot jet itself.
Here’s how to go about re-igniting it:

The next step is to try and re-light the pilot light. To do this you need to follow the instructions in your boiler manual. Every boiler is slightly different, and your manual will give you the steps for your model.
- Follow the Steps Carefully – Typically, re-lighting involves holding down a reset button or a gas control knob while using a lighter or match to ignite the pilot. But again.

3. Faulty Thermostat – Checking the Controls
Sometimes, the problem isn’t with the boiler itself, but with the thermostat. If your boiler seems to be firing up, but your radiators aren’t getting hot or your hot water isn’t as hot as it should be, it could be a problem with the thermostat.
It might be dead batteries, or the thermostat might have developed a fault. There could also be a communication problem between the thermostat and the boiler, especially if you have a wireless system.
Try some quick checks:
Battery Check – Replace them with fresh ones and see if that solves the problem.
Setting Check – Make sure the thermostat is set to the temperature you want and that it’s on the correct program (e.g., “heating” or “hot water”).
Turn Up the Heat – Try turning the thermostat up to a higher temperature than the current room temperature. This will tell the boiler to fire up, and you can see if it responds.
Wireless? Check connections – If it’s a wireless thermostat, check to see that is hasn’t lost contact with the boiler.

4. Faulty Diverter Valve – Heating On But No Hot Water?

When it gets stuck or fails—often due to age or hard water build-up – it can get stuck on one setting. This means you might have hot radiators but an icy shower, or vice-versa.

The most common cause of kettling is a build-up of limescale or sludge inside the boiler’s heat exchanger. This restricts the flow of water, causing it to overheat and make those noises.
