What Makes a Modern Boiler Efficient?
Let’s get straight down to why a new boiler can genuinely cut your energy costs. It’s not just a new way to sell old tech – the way modern boilers generate and use heat is completely different and much smarter than older boilers.
The most important innovation is condensing capability. In an older boiler, a lot of warmth is simply lost with the exhaust fumes. A modern condensing boiler is designed to save this lost energy using an advanced heat exchanger. This is used to cool exhaust gases and – as they cool – water vapour (a by-product of burning gas) condenses into liquid.
This releases heat – which older boilers wasted – and your recovered heat is then used to help warm up the water flowing into your heating system. It’s a way of squeezing the maximum usable heat from every bit of fuel you pay for.
Additionally:
- Modern boilers offer more precise combustion by burning fuel more cleanly and completely.
- They’re also better insulated, so less heat escapes from the boiler’s casing.
- Most boiler models are able to modulate, so they can adjust their flame size to match your heating demand, rather than just running at full power and then stopping.
These combined improvements mean less fuel is wasted, so you enjoy a warmer home, for less.
Is Your Boiler’s Age Costing You? When Does an Upgrade Starts Saving You Money?
You may be in the same situation as a lot of our customers, in that you have an older boiler that’s working fine, but you’re worried it’s costing you a fortune in energy bills. Knowing when to update your boiler usually comes down to its age and efficiency rating.
Boiler efficiency is displayed using an ErP (Energy-related Products) label, with ratings from A+++ (most efficient) down to G (least efficient). All new gas boilers installed today must be A-rated, which means they’re at least 90% efficient – converting 90p of every £1 you spend on fuel into useful heat. Older boilers, particularly those pre-dating the widespread use of condensing technology are much less efficient.
So, when does replacement make financial sense?
• 15+ years old – In this case your boiler’s probably a non-condensing model. Its efficiency could be 80% if it was a good model for its time, but many are closer to 70% (a D-rating or lower) or even less, especially if not regularly serviced.
Upgrading from an old G-rated (often below 70% efficient) boiler to a new A-rated model could save a typical semi-detached home in South Bedfordshire around £300-£380 per year on energy bills. For some very old, inefficient systems, savings can be even higher.
• 10 years old – This could be an early condensing model, or a later non-condensing one. Its efficiency could be around 80-85%. Which is better than a 15-year-old unit, but upgrading to a new 90%+ efficient A-rated boiler can still lead to noticeable savings, potentially reducing your heating bill by 15-20%.
This is especially the case if it’s started to need more frequent repairs.
• 5 years old -Most boilers this age will be condensing and should be A-rated. However, not all A-rated boilers are equal, and technology continuously improves.
If it was a budget model, hasn’t been serviced regularly, or if you suspect it’s not performing as it should, there might still be a case for an upgrade, though savings will be less dramatic.
An energy assessment can help here. For example, ensuring you have modern heating controls, as now required under Boiler Plus regulations, can also improve your energy efficiency.
The above savings are only estimates and can vary based on your home’s size, insulation, how you use your heating, and current energy prices. But the trend is clear: older boilers work harder and waste more of your money.
